What are dental implants?

Firstly, let's look at the structure of your natural teeth. They consist of a visible part called the 'crown', which is seen when you smile and eat, and a root that anchors the tooth in your jawbone. Dental implants are designed to mimic the natural components of a tooth's structure, consisting of similar parts. This allows implants to closely resemble the construction of your natural teeth.

The dental implant consists of a small 'tooth root' like fixture, crafted using high quality, medical grade titanium or ceramic. The implant is inserted into your jaw bone to act as an artificial root. Then, a crown which looks like a natural tooth is attached to an abutment on the implant and you have a complete solution that looks and feel 100% natural.

Dental implants are comfortable and feel completely natural.

Multiple teeth or full mouth replacement do not require titanium implants in every tooth. If several teeth on one side of your mouth needs replacing we build a ‘bridge’ and achieve this with as little as two fixtures. If you wish to get a full mouth of teeth, it can be achieved with a total of four - six implants.

With good oral hygiene, you can expect your titanium implants to last a lifetime. You know the drill, brushing, flossing and regular check-ups. As with everything else in our body, try to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and your implants (and other teeth) will thank you for it. There are also secondary factors outside of your control, such as bone quality and medication that can impact the life of your implants.

What often does need a replacement can be the components of the implants such as internal screws, abutments and occasionally the crown. We typically use a range of different materials for dental crowns and abutments; we will consult with you to find the right material for your particular situation and optimal outcome.

Modern dental implants are generally made from Grade 4/ commercially pure titanium or other metal oxides such as zirconia and fuse to the bone by a process called osseointegration.

All of our implant crowns and prosthetics are made in Australia with genuine components and materials.

  • The cost of a dental implant varies depending on various factors such as the number of implants required, the type of implant, the patient's current dental health condition, and the desired outcome.

Typically, the cost of a single dental implant starts from $4,500-$5000 which includes all of the components including the crown.

  • Tooth implant surgery is a complex restorative, dental treatment; however, you should not feel any pain during the procedure.

At Valley Dental, we use local anesthesia and/or sedation to ensure comfort. Before the implant procedure begins, your dentist will discuss your anesthesia options. Local anesthesia numbs the implant site, and sedation can help you relax. General anesthesia may be recommended for some patients.

After the procedure, you may experience some mild discomfort, but your Valley Dental dentist will provide instructions to manage it. With proper care, most patients can resume normal activities the following day.
